| Marx Brothers - The Marx Brothers were made up of Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Gummo & Zeppo Marx, born in New York City, sibling sons of Jewish immigrants from Germany. From a performing family who encouraged their talents, they began their careers in Vaudeville in 1905, initially as singers and musicians, but discovered their comic talents in 1912 during an interrupted performance in Texas. During the ensuing years the act evolved from singing to comedy with music, by which time Gummo had left and the Marx Brothers were only four.
The Marx Brothers began their film career in 1921 and their subsequent films included The CocoaNuts (1929), Animal Crackers (1930) and Monkey Business in 1931. But their real masterpiece came in 1933 with Duck Soup, before leaving Paramount and continuing for the next 20 years and more variously with MGM, RKO Radio Pictures, United Artists and finally Warner Brothers.
The Marx Brothers were inducted into the Motion Picture Hall of Fame in 1977. |
